This little Eclectus Parrot is only a few hours old! Eclectus are hatched without any down. They are quite vigorous at birth and are very anxious to eat. We feed our own freshly made formula and do not feed a watered down version to our day-one chicks. Many commercially-made formulas are fed quite diluted the first few days.

This Eclectus chick looks at lot like the character ET, the Extraterrestrial! At about ten days of age, Eclectus start to sprout a thick coat of dark grey down feathers.

These Eclectus chicks are about three weeks of age and are nearly completely covered with thick dark grey down. The down tends to be a darker shade of grey in female chicks but this is not always a reliable indication. Using this theory, the chick on the left is male and the one on the right is female.

At about a month of age, the chicks begin to pinfeather and this is the age when Eclectus gender can be reliably determined. The female chick in the upper image is two days younger than the male in the lower image. It is at this age that Eclectus start to be a bit difficult to hand-feed. They will often refuse formula and lunge at the hand-feeder!

Can you tell the gender of these four to five week old Eclectus chicks?

These gorgeous female Vosmaeri Eclectus is about eight weeks of age and is going to a weaning cage on 3/5/02.

On 3/5/02, these three Blue & Gold Macaw chicks are fat and sassy and were taking their afternoon nap until they were rudely awakened by my camera's strobe!

Four Senegal Parrot chicks are about seven weeks old in this image. They will be going to a weaning cage within a week's time and will wean in about three to four more weeks.

These four Rose-Breasted Cockatoo chicks are growing like weeds on 3/5/02. The oldest chicks are nearly two weeks old and are beginning to show sprouting feathers in their shoulders and wings.

What a cutie! This adorable baby Red-Bellied Parrot will go to her new home tomorrow on 3/6/02!

On 3-11-02 we now have nine baby Rose-Breasted Cockatoos hand-feeding in the nursery! The four oldest ones are sprouting pin-feathers and will soon resemble porcupines. They are now nearly three weeks old and you can almost see them grow before your eyes!

The two oldest Blue & Gold Macaws are pin-feathering on 3-11-02. They are about five weeks old now and absolutely adorable.

The oldest Blue & Gold Macaw is pin-feathering quickly on 3/18/02. We are now feeding six baby Blue & Gold Macaws that are all sold. We are accepting deposits now for the next available 2002 babies.

Here are the first baby Bronze-Winged Pionus of the 2002 season on 3/18/02. We raise quite a few of these wonderful birds! We are proud that we are breeding this specie to the fourth generation in captivity. We were one of the first to successfully breed this specie in the US in 1984. We imported our own founder stock from Ecuador in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Here are the four oldest Rose-Breasted Cockatoos chicks on 3/18/02. They are
now prickly with sensitive pinfeathers and are quite shy at this age.

This is a just-hatched Slender-Billed Corella Cockatoo chick that is already a hearty eater at a few hours of age. The chick's down is not even completely fluffed in this image, yet this chick has already been fed our undiluted formula three times and is ready for some more! 3/18/02
